Higher Education Visits Mauna Kea

The House Committee on Higher Education spend two days visiting the Big Island to hear about issues and concerns regarding the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawaii Community College.

The Committee Visited the North Hawaii Education and Research Center in Honoka'a, the site of the new Hawaii Community College Center at Palamanui, the current University Center at Kealakekua, Hawaii Community College, and the UH Hilo School of Pharmacy.

Gemini North Telescope

As part of the visitation, the Committee visited the Scientific Reserve which is managed by the Office of Mauna Kea Management (OMKM) under the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Members heard about the current management plan adopted by the Board of Land and Natural Resources for the care and stewardship of the mountain by the OMKM.

The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. Although unpaid, this hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today’s young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and prepare them for future public service opportunities.

The application period for the Summer 2012 White House Internship Program is now open until January 22, 2012.
All White House Internship Program participants must be:

United States citizens
At least 18 years of age on or before the first day of the internship
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college or university OR graduated in the past two years from an undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college or university
OR
A veteran of the United States Armed Forces who possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent and has served on active duty at any time over the past two years

All White House Interns are expected to intern full-time for the entire term of the program.

The center fulfills the vision of Executive Director Linda Elliot who has labored tirelessly along with her Board of Directors in garnering community and financial support for the facility that will serve as the first line of care for native Hawaiian animals in the event of an environmental disaster such as an oil spill.

NHERC Pavilion Begins

Construction has begun on a new pavilion structure located makai of the new parking lot at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center.

This structure became an add-on to the recently completed Phase II-B enclosure that now houses the Heritage Center when bids for that project came in below expectations and freed up money for this additional project. Autonomy granted to the University allows for the re-programming of state appropriations and allows for the scope of projects to be modified.

Hawaii-China CEO Summit on Renewable Energy

House Finance Committee Visits Big Island

The House Committee on Finance visited various state programs and projects on the Big Island recently. Among their stops on the Big Island was a visitation to Big Island Carbon, Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory, Kawaihae Harbor, a Kohala Zipline and the UH-Hilo Agricultural Park in Panaewa.

At Panaewa, members were briefed on honey production efforts being made by the University and went on tour to view students working with the hives.

The last phase of the Saddle Road Improvements on the east side was dedicated marking the completion of a major capital improvement project that will soon provide a connector between east and west Hawaii. Later that day, a blessing was held to signify the start of construction for the west side leg of the highway which when completed will connect to Mamalahoa Highway approximately 3 miles south of the Waikoloa junction.

The Trust for Public Land dedicated 17 acres of formerly privately-owned shoreline within the Lapakahi State Historical Park. Previously threatened with potential development, the inholding includes hundreds of extremely well-preserved pre-contact sites, including a fishing village, canoe landing areas, and residences of konokoki or ali'i (chiefs). The purchase also provides access to the adjacent Lapakahi Marine Life Conservation District, which serves as habitat for over 116 marine species. The $2.35 purchase of the land was made possible by matching grants from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Costal Estuarine and Land Conservation Program (CELP).

A welcome reception was held for delegates hosted by the Hawaii Host Committee. Representative Marcus Oshiro this year serves as chairman of the CSG Western Region and was largely responsible for organizing many of the meetings and activities that will be occurring during the week.

DCCA Seeks RFP for Mortgage Foreclosure Dispute Resolution

Kawailii Stream Bridge

Construction on Kaiwailii Stream Bridge is moving forward and completion is expected at the end of summer. Replacement of the bridge became necessary after it was damaged in the Kiholo Bay earthquake of October 15, 2006. The contract was awarded a year ago to Hawaiian Dredging for $4.399 million and will involve historic documentation and demolition of the existing bridge, constructing a replacement concrete bridge with seismic upgrades, making improvements to roadway approaches, installing new guardrails and bike railings, and removing the temporary detour road.

Tanohata Benefit

Recently, the Kohala Community held a benefit for the residents of Tanohata, Japan. The Tanohata Village was devastated by the tsunami that hit Japan. According to Mayor Kanji Kamitsukue of Tanohata, as of April 30, 2011, 18 people were dead and 22 were missing, 583 houses were damaged and over 540 people were forced to live as refugees.

Tanohata was selected because it is a small community much like Kohala and has a cost line that very much resembles the lush Kohala coast.

Hawai'i Wildlife Center Executive Director Linda Elliott

Linda Elliott is the founder and Executive Director of the Hawai'i Wildlife Center, now under construction in Hala'ula, Kohala, Hawaii. When the center is complete, it will be a state-of-the-art facility for the rehabilitation of sick, injured and contaminated native wildlife.

Linda is a graduate of Kalaheo High School and holds a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from Arizona State University and is the only oiled wildlife response manager in the region. Linda's passion and dedication for wildlife began before she was ten years old. She will tell you that her earliest life defining moment was when she saw the movie, "Born Free," From that point forward, Linda has pursued her passion for wildlife and conservation. It is hoped that with continued financial support, it is hoped that the center will be able to be completed before the end of the year.

Kohala Armory

The Kohala National Guard Alumni contacted my office regarding possible use of the old Kohala National Guard Armory. The property sits in the middle of Kamehameha Park and the former guardsmen were hoping to use the facility for a meeting place and club house. This seemed like an easy enough request and a call was placed with the Hawaii Department of Defense (DOD). This is where the story got a little tricky.

It seems that after the National Guard abandoned the property, a closure report was made and the property was turned over to the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR). The property was deeded to the Territory of Hawaii by Kohala Sugar Co. for the expressed purpose of housing an armory. The deed provided for return of the property at the point that the government no longer needed the property for an armory. Initial discussions with Dole Foods, the successor to Kohala Sugar went unanswered and the issue was dropped.

I am currently working with DLNR, DOD and the Attorney Generals Office to try and determine how to go about resolving this issue. There is a need to remove some material from the property and the departments are currently at odds on how this will be accomplished. There may be a need for legislation to direct that this be resolved and that negotiations commenced to remedy the ownership issue. It is hoped that once the legislation is in place, negotiations can commence to allow for the clean up of the property and allowing the Guardsmen entry to the property for a meeting place and club house.

The Honoka'a High School Jazz Band Celebrated National Jazz Month with a series of gigs around the Island of O'ahu including a stop at I'olani Palace. The Band played on the grounds of I'olani Palace just prior to the weekly concert by the Royal Hawaiian Band.

The Honoka'a Band was just recently recognized as a "Grammy Signature School." The award created in 1998 recognizes top US public high schools that are making outstanding commitments to music education during an academic school year. The award, which features a mounted Grammy - along with a check for $5,500.

HONOLULU – Waialua High, McKinley High and Kealakehe High School robotics teams won this year’s FIRST in Hawai‘i Regional Robotics Competition, qualifying them to move on to the 2011 FIRST Robotics Championship at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri, April 27-30. In all, six teams from Hawai‘i schools have secured spots in the international championship, ensuring the Aloha State will be well represented in the prestigious competition dubbed the “Super Bowl of Smarts.”

After an exciting weekend of competition, including 55 qualifying matches and a high-energy finals bracket match-up of the top 24 teams, six Hawai‘i teams battled for the championship title including a three-team alliance of Baldwin, Waiakea and Lahainaluna High Schools and an opposing alliance of Waialua, McKinley and Kealakehe High Schools. In a best two-of-three match, the Waialua, McKinley and Kealakehe alliance won in the third match.

"Fifty years ago this month, having won the war and secured the peace almost a generation prior, American youth coming of age were full of optimism, hope, exploration, experimentation and love. In this charged climate on the steps of the Michigan Union, a bold new experiment in public service was launched. The assembled students heard the future President of the United States issue a challenge: how many of them, John Kennedy asked, would be willing to serve their country and the cause of peace by living and working in the developing world?

Following his election, President John F. Kennedy in March, 1961, signed an Executive Order establishing the Peace Corps, forever changing the way America sees the world and the world sees us. Today, one of President Kennedy's most enduring legacies can be found in the over 200,000 current and returned Peace Corps Volunteers and the people of 139 host countries. March is Peace Corp Month and on this 50th anniversary, the United States Peace Corps remains an enduring symbol of our Nation's commitment to encouraging progress, creating opportunity, and fostering mutual respect and understanding throughout the world.

In Hawaii, the Hilo College Center for Cross-Cultural Training and Research designed one of the first Peace Corp training centers, with its field station in Waipi‘o Valley. In the valley, trainees spent one to three weeks experiencing the challenges of rustic living and became immersed in the cultures they would serve. The rest of their training occurred in the many plantation camps that dotted the Hamakua Coast -- Pepeekeo, Honomu, and Honohina among them.

On this anniversary, we honor the men and women from across the country who have carried forward our Nation's finest tradition of service, and we rededicate ourselves to fulfilling the dream and continuing the work of all those who aspire and yearn for peace."

After what seems like a long time in coming, a ground breaking ceremony was held at the site on the new Hawaii Community College Palamanui Campus. Located north of the Kona International Airport, the campus will provide a permanent site for higher educational services in the West Hawaii area. When completed, the campus will replace temporary facilities located in Captain Cook and will allow for the expansion of course offerings to the greater West Hawaii area.
The initial complex will include two classroom building and will be completed by the Palamanui Development Partnership as part of their community benefit package.

I invited Richel Cole, a senior at Sacred Hearts Academy to present the opening invocation to the State of Hawaii House of Representatives on March 16, 2011. Mark met Richel when she delivered a keynote address at a conference sponsored by Enterprise Honolulu this past summer.

Richel told a story about how she was spurred into action by a young girl who did not think that she could go to college. Taking the initiative, Richel founded the YWCA Youth Network that now provides encouragement young women to continue their education beyond high school.

The 2001 Big City Tour saw the Honoka'a High School Jazz band play numerous Oahu venues including Dot's in Wahiawa and the grounds of the Iolani Palace as they celebrated National Jazz Month in April.

The Honokaa High School Jazz Band, long a source of Hamakua civic pride, will soon have another award in its trophy case -- the 2011 Grammy Signature Schools Enterprise Award. The Grammy Signature Schools program exemplifies the Grammy Foundation's commitment to fostering excellence in music education in public high schools.

Gary Washburn, Honokaa High music teacher and bandleader, called the award "the biggest recognition that we've attracted." That's saying a lot. Last year, the school's music program was recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants and the jazz band was featured on National Public Radio's "From the Top" program. And this year, Washburn received the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction Award from the National Society of High School Scholars Jazz.

Over four years since the November, 2006 earthquake rocked West Hawaii, the Paauilo Senior Citizens can finally return home to their meeting place in the Paauilo Gym Annex building. The building, which received structural damage during the earthquake has forced the Senior Citizens group to meet in the basement of another building above the gym for the past four years.

The Young Democrats of Hawaii held a "Professionals Pau Hana" event at Ocean's night club at Restaurant Row. The event was well attended by Honolulu's young professionals and included appearances by U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka, and Congresswoman Mazie Hirono. U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye brought his newly inherited security entourage and several other Democratic leaders to Honoka'a School Cafeteria to join North Hawaii residents in celebrating the community’s “Ag Country Roots.”

The event was paid for and authorized by the Democratic Party of Hawaii and spotlighted many of the hard-working food producers of the region and included samplings of grilled grass-finished beef and a new sausage of Kahua mutton, Hamakua mushrooms and farm fresh Waimea Greens, offerings from Hamakua Springs Farms, other foods grown or produced in Hamakua, Waimea and Kohala.

Informational exhibits also featured in-school programs to grow the next generation of farmers and introduce the benefits of fresh, locally grown foods from farms and ranches in the region as well as back-yard gardens.

Senator Inouye was recognized for directing federal programs to the area following the close of Hamakua Sugar in 1994. Many of the displays featured various agricultural entities that have grown to help fill the void in agriculture left by the departure of the sugar industry from the Big Island. It was also an opportunity for the Senator to affirm his support for the Democratic ticket of Abercrombie and Schatz.

Former Mealani Extension agent Milton Yamasaki was also recognized for his part in promoting agriculture in North Hawaii with development of green tea, blueberries, and grass finished beef.

The YWCA of Hawaii recently held their 2nd Annual "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event which is a fundraiser for domestic violence programs and prevention. Unlike last year's event where participants had a leisurely stroll to the Mooheau Park Bandstand, this year the route took us from the YWCA down to Kamehameha Avenue, up Ponahawai Street, and back to the YWCA, a "real" grueling one mile in heels.

I think I nearly twisted my ankle 6 times along the route this year.

“Personally, I would like to see redistricting of the BOE, so it would become much more accountable to the voters,” he said.

“In the end, my colleagues decided we would put this constitutional amendment to the voters to consider instead.”

Nakashima said he feels schools need more local input, and the pro- posal before voters lessens that input in an attempt to increase accountability.

“This issue gained trac- tion because of furlough days focusing attention on public education, with the argument that school fur- lough days would never have happened if things were different,” he said.

“Just because there’s accountability doesn’t mean good decisions are made,” he said. “People tend to for- get that the governor pro-posed the furlough days. She actually proposed three furlough days a month, not two.

“(The amendment) might create more accountability, but if accountability is all we’re looking for, why wouldn’t we just go with an appointed superintendent?” he asked. “I think we need public input into the school system.”

Nakashima said he believes that the Legislature approved the appointed- BOE plan due to the intense pressure it was receiving from the public last year over the furlough days.

“The incident with Save our Schools folks, and the incident with the arrests in the governor’s office con- tributed,” he said. “It created a momentum for change. Some believe any change is better than what we have. At this point, I’m willing to let the voters come to a decision on it.”

Potomac League Visits Hamakua

The Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center (PBARC) recently hosted two visitors from the Potomac League as part of their "Zero Waste" initiative. In brief, the goal is to identify an algae in Hawaii that will be able to consume agricultural waste. This will allow what would otherwise be a burden on farmers to be turned into an additional profit stream that would supplement farm income. A secondary benefit from this process will be harvesting the algae and using it to develop bio-fuels and possibly a feed.

Honoka'a Peace Festival

The Honoka'a Peace Festival was held at the County Park in Honoka'a on Sunday, September 19, 2010. The festival caps a nearly year-long planning process by the Honoka'a Peace Festival Committee. The Committee diligently met on a weekly basis at the Honoka'a Hongwanji, which was the primary sponsor of the festival.

This was the fourth year that the festival was held in Honoka'a and featured peace themed movies, speakers and displays. Stores and business also were decorated with doves and "peace" mobiles in celebration of the festivities.

Peace Festival Chair Miles Okamura was also awarded the 2010 "Distinguished Peacemaker of the Year" at a special presentation at the Peace Day Banquet on Oahu.

The Festival is tied to the United Nations Day of Peace which is held annually on September 21st and was successfully lobbied at the State Legislature by the Hongwanji's Young Buddhist Association.

The retaining wall located at the makai-Hilo corner of the Honoka'a High School Campus is finally complete. Damaged during the 2006 earthquake, the wall which existed for years surname to the earth's rumbling that caused much damage in North Hawaii.

In the picture above, workers construct a cement wall with a faux stone finish. When painted, most people will not be able to tell that the wall is made entirely of concrete with no "real" stones.

15th Mealani Taste of the Hawaiian Range

The 15th annual "Taste of the Hawaiian Range" was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Friday. The event, a fundraiser for the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources was founded by Milton Yamasaki and the staff of the Mealani Research Station in Waimea. According to the event website, over the past 15 years -- Mealani's Taste of the Hawaiian Range continues to share the importance of creating a Big Island livestockproduction system that is economically, ecologically and socially sustainable. It markets local products by hooking up producers with users, such as chefs ad consumers. The Taste also enables producers to get instant product feedback and network with other industry members.

Honoka'a HIgh School Wall Rebuilt

The large stone wall marking the Makai-Hilo boundary of the Honoka'a High School Campus has been unstable since the October, 2006 earthquake that caused much damage in North Hawaii. A portion of the wall running mauka-makai gave away during the quake and has remained unrepaired for the past four years. Finishing touches were made to the concrete wall by adding the appearance of a rock wall finish made of concrete which marks completion of that phase of the project that began several months ago.

The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation is dedicated to providing essential life-saving equipment and training needed by Hawaii Fire Department here on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Foundation was started then years ago by Dr. Frank Sayre and Laura Mallery-Sayre when they lost their son Danny in a hiking accident and experienced first-hand the heroism and perilous nature of the work that the Hawaii Fire Department experiences on a regular basis. At the time, the Fire Department did not have rappelling ropes long enough to reach the bottom of the valley, so Hawaii Fire Department personnel took their helicopter down into Polulu Valley at great personal risk. NHERC Construction Nearing Completion

Phase 2-B of the North Hawaii Education and Research Center is nearly complete and occupancy for the new wing is expected by November 1, 2010. The project which enclosed the bottom floor of Phase 2 and included the addition of a new parking lot and photovoltaic panels on the Phase 1 roof adds new program space for the anticipated heritage center and the Hamakua ADRC (Adult and Disabled Resource Center). Low bids on the project made possible the addition of a pavilion that will be erected on the Makai-Waipio side of the property and will provide an additional resource for use at the facility.

Thursday was a busy day with meetings regarding the North-Hilo Hamakua Coop, Hamakua Ditch, and the Hamakua Elder Care Project were all held via video conference at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center. The presence of NHERC in our community provides another excellent resource for our community to meet face to face -- via video conferencing -- with people on the island, in the state, or around the world without the need for extensive travel time. In the case of these meetings, it also allowed for the participation by staff and state officials without the need to incur expensive airfares and the loss of productivity by avoiding the need for inter-island travel.

DU Discussed at PTA

The Commander of the Pokahuloa Training Area hosted a meeting to update Big Island Officials and the community regarding the current depleted uranium (DU) situation in the training area. In the 60's, DU spotting rounds were utilized in training activities held in Pohakuloa as part of the Army's Davy Crockett weapons system.

The portable field launch system was intended as a nuclear device for use against enemy infantry personnel during the height of the Cold War. Fortunately, this weapon was never used, however DU spotting rounds, used to simulate the weight and characteristics of the nuclear projectile were used in Pohakuloa and on the Scholfield Barracks Base on Oahu.

The army claims that there is minimal acceptable risk at Pohakuloa, assuming that the area containing the DU spotting rounds remains undisturbed.

When asked about the possibility that the DU could find it's way into the ground water, a civilian army official admitted that it could happen in "a billion years." I am concerned that there is a possibility that the DU could eventually find it's way into the ground water and believe that this would warrant it's removal.

Lions Stamp Out Graffiti

The Hamakua Lions recently participated in a Graffiti stamp out at Honoka'a County Park. The Park had been the victim of a terrorist who obviously had too much time on their hands this past summer and marked up the restroom facilities at the park.

The initial plan was to work on the upper park area, however that plan had to be changed as weather prohibited the painting of the upper facilities. The project was chaired by Lions Oswaldo Cabel and Lala Epenesa who recruited volunteers, gathered paint and equipment and even organized a fellowship lunch.

Laupahoehoe School Recognizes Top Scorers

It was not sports scores that was recognized at a special assembly at Laupahoehoe School this past Monday, but test scores in math and reading for the Hawaii State Assessment Test.

The tests were administered to mare than 93,000 students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10 over a three-week period this past April. Overall, Hawaii State Assessment results showed the percentage of students testing proficient in reading rose from 41 percent (2003) and 60 percent (2007) to 67 percent. In math, it rose from 20 percent (2003) and 38 percent (2007) to 49 percent.

BOE Votes NO Consolidation for Kohala Schools

Students from Kohala Middle School gather outside the Waiakea Intermediate School Cafeteria last night following the vote by the Board of Education not to consolidate their school with the Kohala elementary and high school campuses. The vote comes over a year after the task force convinced in Kohala to assess the future of the school based on administrative rules that were in place for the closure and consolidation of under utilized schools.

The task force report which under the administrative rules should have gone to the Board of Education in February was delayed as the department undertook a further assessment using criteria which was not available to the task force nor complied with the sun-shine regulations under which the task force operated. This left many in the community dismayed and disillusioned with the administrative process and left many with reasons to feel hijacked by the process.

Rally Supports Kohala Middle School

Kohala Middle School students carry signs they made in support of their school which is being considered for consolidation by the Board of Education. The school moved to the top of the list because it was being considered for "whole school renovation" -- a program that refurbishes older school facilities giving them a complete "make-over." The DOE decided to hold off on the renovation until it determined if the school should even remain open.

A report completed by a community task force appointed by the Complex Area Superintendent completed a report in December, 2009, however the report has been undergoing additional scrutiny by the Department which has been pushing for a consolidation of the school back to the elementary and high school campus, a few miles away. Following lobbying by the community, the department has taken the position that consolidation would be too costly at this time, however many in the community believe that the educational benefits to the students far outweigh any cost savings that may occur years down the road and only after substantial capital improvement expenditures.

While the department position is now more aligned with the community, we have decided not to take any chances as the department has demonstrated that we cannot assume that it will do the right thing. I will continue to work on legislation that creates more openness and responsiveness to community input and concerns by strengthening the school community council as a way to address these concerns. The full implementation of performance contracts for school administrators which include meaningful input by the school community councils will help to move us toward this end.

RIMPAC Exercises Close

The Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) is the world's largest international maritime exercise which is designed to increase mutual cooperation and enhance the tactical capabilities of participating nations in various aspects of maritime operations at sea.

RIMPAC 2010, whose theme is "Combined Agility, Synergy and Support," marks the 22nd exercise in the series. Major objectives include improving the readiness and efficiency of each of the participating units and exercising interoperability among partner nations that have a common interest in regional maritime security. By enhancing interoperability, RIMPAC helps to promote stability in the Pacific Rim region to the benefit of all participating nations.

Mark participated in closing ceremonies held aboard the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier that included personnel from the many participating counties.

Fishermen Organize

Big Island fishermen are organizing to protest proposed rule changes being made the the Department of Land and Natural Resources that would seek to place bag limits on a number of types of fish and threatens to severely impair the ability of commercial fisherman to continue their livelihood. The fishermen believe that the proposals are without any scientific basis and are being formulated because Department experts are not willing to consider the importance of seasonal restrictions to control and manage fish populations as a viable alternative to across the board restrictions that do not take into account mating seasons, spawning cycles or fish migration patterns.

First Annual Big Island International Micro Robotics Conference

Participants in the First Annual Big Island Micro-Robotics Conference learned to build several robotics platforms during the three day conference held at the Imiloa Astronomy Center on the campus of the University of Hawaii Hilo. Students and teachers learned about EasyBots, BrushBots, and Letry robots in sessions that included design and construction, introduction to electronics and programming.

The goals of this conference were to introduce the micro-robotics genre to a wider audience in Hawaii and create the opportunity for students to participate in a competition closer to home. Currently, students from Waiakea High School have been travelling to Nagoya, Japan in order to participate in the micro-robotics tournament held at Nagoya University.

"It is exciting to think that we are developing a skill set with students here on the Big Island that equals or surpasses those in colleges anywhere else," said Mark. "Using robotics as a basis for learning is the first step as we progress toward finding real world and business applications for these skills."

With technologies such as volcanology, deep water research, astronomy and geothermal here on one island, the possible applications for robotics are limitless.

After nearly forty years as the head of the Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council, George Yokoyama is stepping down as Executive Director. A fundraiser/roast was held at the Afook-Chinen Civil Center in Hilo with an estimated 2,000 people gathered to honor the long-time humanitarian.

As head of HCEOC, George has spent his life providing services and assistance to the poor, elderly, young, and unemployed in our community. Many of those people at the fringes of our community who would otherwise fall through the cracks if it were not for the many grants and other assistance that come to Hawaii County as a result of thework of George and HCEOC.

Councilman "Fresh" Onishi and I participated in the County Parks and Recreation watermelon eating contest that was held in conjunction with the County of Hawaii Hilo Bay Blast celebrating the Fourth of July in Hilo. All of the children participating in the contest received a bevy of school supplies from the Parks Department.

Kohala Community Reunion

Every five years since 1995, the Kohala community has hosted a reunion, providing residents past and present the opportunity to reconnect with their roots, enjoy good fellowship and taste lots and lots of ono grinds.

The Host committee has been accepting applications and arranging for housing for the many former residents who are returning home to celebrate their roots, relive the good times and reminisce with old acquaintances.
